(1.) James P. Allison, Tasuku Honjo jointly win 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet on October 1, 2018 awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo “for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation”. 

Cancer kills millions of people every year and is one of humanity’s greatest health challenges. The laureates James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo successfully established an entirely new principle for cancer therapy by stimulating the ability of immune system to attack tumour cells. 

(2.) World Habitat Day 2018 observed globally

The World Habitat Day was observed across the world on October 1, 2018, that is the first Monday of October 2018, to uncover the present state of the world’s towns and cities, and emphasise the basic right of all to receive adequate shelter.

The 2018 Theme of the Day was Municipal Solid Waste Management. The Solid Waste Management has become a global issue in recent years. The amount of waste produced by individuals is growing daily and often costs local authorities a large proportion of their budget. Unplanned and poor waste collection and disposal can lead to serious health problems from uncontrolled dump sites.
The main event was held in Nairobi, Kenya.
  
Theme 2018
2018 Theme: Municipal Solid Waste Management
The main aim behind the observance of this year’s World Habitat Day is to address the municipal solid waste management challenge with a slogan ‘Waste-Wise Cities’. The theme aims to:
  • Raise awareness that Municipal solid waste is a global challenge that needs to be addressed
  • Facilitate policy dialogue and form partnerships
  • Promote innovative solutions to municipal solid waste management
  • Mobilise resources to address the municipal solid waste challenges
The Solid Waste Management has become a global issue in recent years. The amount of waste produced by individuals is growing daily and often costs local authorities a large proportion of their budget.
In 2010, every day 0.8 kilograms of waste was produced by every person in the world. The amount of total waste generated is expected to triple to 5.9 billion tons a year by 2025 due to ineffective waste management strategies.
Unplanned and poor waste collection and disposal can lead to serious health problems from uncontrolled dump sites.
 

(3.) Government constitutes Competition Law Review Committee to review Competition Act

The Union Government on September 30, 2018 constituted a Competition Law Review Committee to review the Competition Act, 2002. The Committee will be headed by Injeti Srinivas, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The Review Committee was constituted with an aim to ensure that the Act coexists with the needs of strong economic fundamentals.

The Committee will review the Competition Act and its rules and regulations to change business environment and bring necessary changes, if required. It will look into international best practices in the competition fields, especially anti-trust laws, merger guidelines and handling cross border competition issues.
