Banking History

(1.) First Bank opened in India
In 1770 by Alexander & Company namely Bank of Hindustan in Kolkata.

(2.) 1806:- Presidency Bank of Bengal by East India Company

(3.) 1840:- Presidency Bank of Bombay by East India Company

(4.) 1843:- Presidency Bank of Madras by East India Company

All the Presidency banks merged into Imperial Bank by British government in 1921 and after independence, this Imperial Bank was shifted to S.B.I. on 1st of July 1955 by A.D. Gonwala Committee.

  • S.B.I. Headquarter:- Mumbai
  • Largest commercial bank of India:- S.B.I

(5.) India's first commercial bank:- Allahabad Commercial Bank in 1865

                                                     =>Headquarter:-Kolkata
                                                     =>Shares:- Britishers + Indians

(6.) 1st commercial bank which was established by Indians only:- Punjab Commercial Bank in 1894
        => 100% Shares of Indians
        => Founder:- Lala Laj Path Rai
        => Initial Headquarter:- Lahore
        But after Independence headquarter is shifted to Delhi.
